Jewelry layaway software that keeps every instalment straight

Jewelry layaway software lets a customer reserve a piece with a deposit and pay the rest in instalments while you keep an exact balance. In GetJewelryPOS the sale is recorded with its deposit, each later payment gets its own receipt, the item stays reserved until it is paid, and due and overdue reports show who owes what. Reminders go out without anyone keeping a notebook.

    Definition

    Layaway

Layaway is a sale where the customer pays a deposit, the store holds the item, and the remaining balance is paid in instalments before the piece is collected. It suits bridal sets, festival gifts and other high-value buys, and it only works if every payment and the remaining balance are recorded accurately.

    How layaway & instalments works

    1. Step 1

      Agree the terms

Choose the piece and agree the deposit and the payment schedule with the customer. Print or note your store's layaway policy, including cancellation terms, so both sides know the rules.

    2. Step 2

      Take the deposit

Ring up the sale and record the deposit as a partial payment. The balance due is tracked on the sale and on the customer's ledger, and the piece is reserved.

    3. Step 3

      Record each instalment

When the customer pays again, add the payment to the same sale. Each payment prints its own receipt showing the amount paid and the balance left.

    4. Step 4

      Follow up on due dates

Due and overdue reports show which balances need a call. Send reminders by SMS or email using your templates rather than chasing from memory. Overdue accounts are easy to spot.

    5. Step 5

      Hand over at zero

When the balance reaches zero, the sale is complete and the piece leaves the reserve. The full payment trail stays on the customer's record. Print a final receipt for the customer.

What’s included in layaway & instalments

    1. Balance on the ledger

Partial payments reduce the balance on the sale and on the customer account. Any staff member can tell a customer exactly what remains without searching a card file. The figure is the same at every counter.

    2. Receipt per payment

Every instalment produces its own receipt. Customers keep proof of each payment, and you have a matching record if a dispute ever comes up. Reprint any of them later from the sale if a customer loses one.

    3. Item held for the customer

The piece is tied to the layaway sale, so it is not sold twice. Staff see it as reserved, not as stock available on the tray. If the layaway is cancelled, the piece returns to available stock with its history kept.

    4. Due and overdue reports

See every open balance, filter by customer or date, and spot overdue accounts early. Festival and wedding seasons stop being a pile of reminders on sticky notes. Totals show how much is owed to the store overall.

    5. Reminders

Use SMS or email templates for payment reminders. Keep the tone friendly and include the balance, so the customer does not have to call to ask. Edit templates as your policy changes; SMS needs a connected provider.

    6. Any payment method

Record cash, card, bank transfer or local wallets as the method for each instalment. Mixed payments on one layaway are normal and stay readable. Each receipt records the method used, so end-of-day register counts still balance.

How layaway & instalments works in the USA, the UAE and Pakistan

Same software, local habits. Pick a market to read the note for it.

    US · USD

    United States

Bridal layaway is common in US stores, especially for engagement rings bought ahead of a proposal. Some states have layaway disclosure rules, so print your terms on the receipt; sales tax is added to the sale at checkout.

    UAE

In the UAE, instalment buyers often send transfer screenshots on WhatsApp; record each bank transfer as a payment against the sale so the VAT-inclusive balance stays correct.

    PK · PKR

    Pakistan

Pakistani families often buy wedding jewellery in instalments over months; agree whether the price is fixed at booking or per tola at collection, and record it on the sale before taking the first payment.

    What it doesn't do

GetJewelryPOS records layaway; it is not a lender and does not offer credit, interest or financing. Your layaway policy, cancellation fees and any consumer rules in your state or country are yours to set and follow. If gold prices move, the software keeps the price agreed on the sale unless you change it. Card instalments go through your own processor.

    Layaway & instalments: common questions

Does GetJewelryPOS charge interest on layaway?

No. It records the deposit and payments on the sale. It is not a credit or financing product, and it does not add interest.

Can a customer pay instalments in different ways?

Yes. Each payment can use its own method, such as cash, card or bank transfer. All of them reduce the same balance.

Is the item held while the customer pays?

Yes. The piece is tied to the layaway sale and shown as reserved, so it cannot be sold to someone else from the tray.

Does the customer get a receipt for each payment?

Yes. Every instalment prints its own receipt with the amount paid and the balance remaining.

How do I see who is overdue?

Run the due and overdue report. It lists open balances by customer and date so you know whom to remind.

    Can I send payment reminders?

Yes. Use SMS or email templates for reminders. SMS needs an SMS provider connected in your settings.

    What if the customer cancels?

Follow your own layaway policy. Record the refund or store credit against the sale so the ledger matches what you agreed.

Does the gold price change during the layaway?

Not unless you change it. The price on the sale stays as agreed. If your policy prices gold at collection, update the sale at that point.

Can I use layaway for custom orders too?

Yes. Custom orders also take a deposit and stage payments. See the custom orders feature for the quotation-to-invoice flow.
